Los Angeles Ballet - Swan Lake

Los Angeles Ballet - Swan Lake at Royce Hall

Why see Los Angeles Ballet - Swan Lake?

AN ENCHANING AND DREAMY EXPERIENCE

Officially most recognized ballet in the world, Swan Lake's appeal only deepens with each rendition each season. With its timeless choreography by classical ballet's finest duo Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov and Tchaikovsky's sublime score, this supernatural tale of transformed maidens, villainous sorcerers and finding true love is a glorious introduction to ballet.

Based on stories from Russian folk law, Swan Lake first premiered in Moscow in 1877, where 'neither the ballet nor it's ballerina were well received'. However in 1895, a newly revived version won over the audience from the first note, crystalizing as the unmissable icon you see today.

ODETTE'S TALE, THE STORY OF SWAN LAKE

Dashing Prince Siegfried is urged by his mother to marry soon and she bids he makes his choice the following night, at the royal ball. Frustrated, he goes hunting with his friends and becomes separated. Whilst trying to find a way home, he is astonished to witness the transformation of one of the swans marked for prey into a beautiful maiden.

He falls deeply in love, but the swan maiden is terrified of him. Out of fear, she divulges that she and her companions are victims of an evil spell, cast by the sorcerer, Von Rothbart, who traps them on the lake and as swans by day and human by night. The only way to break this spell is for one who has never loved before to love her, The Swan Queen.

Prince Siegfried sets out to break the spell and rescue Odette, pitting him against the evil sorcerer in this wonderful story of magic and romance...

LA Ballet Comes of Age

LA Ballet's Swan Lake at the Alex Theater in Glendale last night was a pure delight. I've seen many Swan Lake performances since 1985, including the top American and European professional ballet companies. Each one is different, interesting, mesmerizing, and fulfilling. LA Ballet's production and performance last night joins my long list of memorable Swan Lakes. The only thing that was missing was a full orchestra, and my best hope is for LA Ballet to move to bigger venues with a large enough orchestra pit. I can hear the LA Music Center calling the LA Ballet as its future home, especially now that is has come of age. It could join the world's best professional ballet companies, once it is accompanied by a full professional orchestra to provide a complete musical and theatrical experience. ... Read more
