Amazing Amalie
This show has such pizzazz...it is wonderfully performed, choreographed, staged, designed--and the music and lyrics are brilliant. It was so enjoyable on our visit on the first preview night, that we bought tix for the night of the 15th, the last preview and then again on the 23rd. And we have to drive for over an hour to get to the theater. We saw it at the Berkeley Rep, where it was a really good show, but this iteration just blew our minds. The audience loved it and gave an incredible ovation at the end. It is fast paced, and when it is over, you want more. And it was fun to see so many in the audience wearing their Amelie outfits!
Amazing cast, but struggles to live up to 2001 film
I was very impressed by the cast! Great talent. However, the show does drag on a bit, with a few of the numbers falling a bit flat. Overall three stars, some of our fellow audience members may not agree with this rating however, as there were a few walk outs. Fails to capture the audience like the '01 film. Props to Phillipa Soo for her performance, great talent.
Subtly lost in translation
If you are a fan of the 2001 film, Amelie, then this play may not charm you in the same way the film may have. The beauty and appeal that i found in the film, was the subtle moments captured by film. Cracking the creme brulee, cleaning the tool box, and Amelie's intimate child-like smile to the camera. This play had an impressive cast. Each actor had charm, wit and impressive voices. However, the drama and energy that the stage demands, did not capture the intimacy and charm that the film was able to convey. Amelie her self is an introverted, smart young lady in the film. Whereas in this musical, she is a boisterous, daring woman. To no fault of this great cast and crew, this story was not well translated to the stage.
