Omara Portuondo at Walt Disney Concert Hall

Why see Omara Portuondo?

The Grandmother of Cuban Music On US Shores

Hailed as the 'Edith Piaf of Cuba', Omara Portuondo held her own as the only female of the Buena Vista Social Club from 1996 onwards, but her contributions to the Cuban musical tradition run much deeper and farther back; she founded the legendary vocal group Cuarteto d'Aida and collaborated with notable Cuban musicians including Julio Guitierrez, Juanito Marquez and Chucho Valdes.

The Latin Grammy-winning songstress may be nearing 90 years of age, but still displays her youthful dancer's vigour when she takes to the stage. Listen out for classics including her signature bolero Dos Gardenias and other iconic songs spanning the styles of mambo, son and rumba to name a few!
