He didn't just reinvent his own compositional language, he created an alternative way of thinking about the symphony - and produced one of the richest, most compelling pieces he would ever write.

Gustavo Dudamel's Schumann Focus series continues with the composer's vigorous Second Symphony
Known for his close explorations of the masters and their music, LA Philharmonic director extraordinaire Gustavo Dudamel examines and exults the works of Romantic Era giant Robert Schumann during the institution's 2017/18 Schumann Focus Series. Stitching together all four of his sweeping symphonies, his cello and piano concertos over three weekends, the ensemble will paint a fascinating aural portrait of the icon and his enduring legacy.
Ivory-tickling virtuoso and leading Schumann interpreter Mitsuko Uchida returns to the second concert in the series to perform the composer's only piano concerto, a richly melodic work brimming with joy that's become the perfect introduction to his mid-19th century composition techniques. The program closes with his Second Symphony, an uplifting piece brimming with a vigour that belied his ailing health at the time of writing.
