Los Angeles Philharmonic - Mendelssohn's A Midsummer Night's Dream at Walt Disney Concert Hall

Why see Los Angeles Philharmonic - Mendelssohn's A Midsummer Night's Dream?

Shakespeare in concert!

Composed at the tender age of just 17, Mendelssohn's score for Shakespeare's fantastical play has captured the public imagination since its debut in Stettin in 1827. Guest maestra Susanna Malkki will take up the baton for this female-centric performance, fresh from taking over conducting duties at the Helsinki Orchestra. Joining the Phil will be the Grammy Award-nominated Women of the Los Angeles Master Chorale, now celebrating their 43rd season under the leadership of Grant Gershon. In addition, there will be scenes performed from the play! A must-see for fans of the Bard.

A Midsummer Night's Dream focuses on three parallel stories while dealing with the universal theme of love and its complications. It follows the trials of two couples as they camp in a magical forest, the world of the fairy King and Queen who inhabit said forest and a group of tradesmen attempting to stage a production of 'Pyramus and Thisby' for the wedding of the Duke of Athens. In true Shakespearean comedy-style, these stories don't stay separate for long and worlds collide in a spectacularly hilarious fashion. Love, action, magic and comedy mix to create a truly magical spell.
