Why see Zoot Suit?
Zoot Suit Returns To Its BirthPlace
The City of Angels is set to host to the return of Zoot Suit, a groundbreaking musical smash hit that first debuted in the Los Angeles in 1978. The show subsequently went on to become one of Broadway's first ever Chicano plays, wowing sold out audiences with it's trailblazing social and political commentary, classic score and witty dialogue. Don't miss Zoot Suit when it returns to the Mark Taper Forum under the direction of Luis Valdez to celebrate the Centre Theatre Groups 50th Anniversary!
The story is inspired by the infamous 1942 Sleepy Lagoon Murder, subsequent trial and Zoot Suit riots, following the lives of the era's Mexican-Americans and their struggles with racism, assimilation and ethnic identity. Considered to be the first play of the Chicano Theatre tradition, its powerful message about a marginalised community and their bonds of family and friendship rings eerily true today.
