Why see South Pacific?

Rodgers and Hammerstein's Classic Wartime Musical

The 1949 Broadway smash hit South Pacific first premiered to rave reviews and critical acclaim, becoming part of Great White Way's classic musical theatre repertoire with it's stunning score, penned by Rodgers and Hammerstein, and dramatic wartime story, one that still resonates with audiences to this day. The production enjoys an exciting local revival at LA's La Mirada Theatre this Spring.

Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book by James A. Michener, the story follows two blossoming romances on an island in the South Pacific during World War II. Nellie Forbush, an American nurse, falls for the charms of wealthy French planter Emile De Becque, but is unable to come to terms with his past relationships with several local women. Lt. Joe Cable shares Nellie's prejudice and although he is in love with a Tonkinese woman, he has trouble looking past the color of her skin.

I've seen the movie with Mitzi Gaynor and Rossano Bazzi 20 times and have to remember they simply just can't be duplicated. The people who performed last night gave it their all and I would recommend seeing this play, just remember they simply can't bring the South Pacific on stage and to compare it with the movie as I found myself doing only made me realize I was not giving credit where credit was due. ...
