Scottish Ballet - A Streetcar Named Desire at Dorothy Chandler Pavilion

Why see Scottish Ballet - A Streetcar Named Desire?

back for 2023

Scottish Ballet once more presents their critically acclaimed and award-winning production of A Streetcar Named Desire, based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Tennessee Williams. The production, which was originally commissioned in 2012 to celebrate the 65th anniversary of Williams' work, follows the sexually charged story of Stanley and Blanche in a searing ballet interpretation that sets the stage on fire.

What is the story?

When faded Southern belle Blanche finds her decadent life crumbling around her, she falls on the mercy of her timid sister Stella for some relief. A strong sexual marriage is suggested between the two, as well as frequent arguments and threats to leave him. Throw the sexually flamboyant Blanche into the mix, and a devastating sequence of events follow...

The show was beautiful and powerful. A tip for the uninitiated like me. Definitely go to the Dorothy Chandler website, find the show program and read the synopsis. It helps to see where they're going with the story. It's different than the play or the movie and there aren't any spoilers. You could also get to the theatre and read it there. Enjoy! ... Read more
