Spring Awakening at Cupcake Theater

Why see Spring Awakening?

One day all will know

The rollercoaster of adolescence is center stage in this rock-infused Tony-winning musical from Duncan Shiek and Steven Sater. Based on a play by Frank Wedekind, Spring Awakening sweeps you back in time to 19th Century Germany where a group of teenagers navigates the heady world of hormones that bridge the gap between childhood and adulthood. With an electric score and an absorbing and touching book, don't miss this modern Broadway pioneer at the Cupcake Theatre this summer.

WHAT IS SPRING AWAKENING ABOUT?

Wendla and Moritz are a pair of teens struggling to break through the smothering societal and moral codes of late 1800's Germany. Seeking something more from life, they embark on a voyage of personal and sexual exploration which puts them on a collision course with their elders and betters.

Talent Shines despite venue

Spring Awakening is a musical that we were very familiar with, so it was nice to see this somewhat fresh take on the piece. Technical elements such as microphones, and the poles in the seating area that slightly obstruct many patron's view make the ticket prices a little too high - but the energy from the performances is wonderful. Of particular note is Moritz and Ilse (at this performance played by Robert Manion and Natalie Llerena). Our group saw the national tour of spring awakening, and the portrayals in this production are stronger, they will have you sobbing. Fresh choreography in the musical numbers also benefit the production, but some of the scene blocking is clunky (particularly in the final scene where the chorus is needlessly utilised). We would be interested to see other combinations of cast, but tickets are too expensive. There is no parking at this theatre, so uber or plan to come early. ... Read more
