The groundbreaking play about the Black experience in 1950s America

Why See A Raisin In The Sun?

Lorraine Hansberry's landmark work

One of the first mainstream plays to seriously grapple with the African American experience, A Raisin in the Sun follows Walter and the Younger family, and the troubles which befall them when his elderly mother inherits a large sum of money. Walter wants to invest in a liquor store, while Mama wants to put the money down on a new home in a white neighborhood for reasons of affordability.

A Raisin in the Sun first premiered in New York in 1959, making history as the first Broadway play written by a black woman. It's since been adapted for the big screen several times, and was most recently revived on the Great White Way in 2014, a production which starred Denzel Washington and Sophie Okonedo. This A Noise Within staging is directed by Gregg T. Daniel.
