Fresh from a successful off-broadway run in New York, Sarah Jones brings Sell/Buy/Date to California where it will premiere on the West Coast as part of The Geffen Playhouse's 2017/18 season. Best known for her award-winning (and Meryl Streep produced) solo performance, Bridge & Tunnel which explored immigrants living in New York, Jones once again uses a medley of ethnicities to tell her story.
Jones portrays an eclectic mix of characters each bound by an association with the sex industry. They appear as visceral teaching aids in a futuristic classroom led by an English professor, whose aim is to immerse her students in the varying perspectives and emotions of those affected by the sex trade of the past (our present day). It is this inventive use of narrative that provides the audience with an opportunity to explore all dimensions of sex work and gives a voice to those who have previously been marginalized.
Jones captures the diversity of our multicultural and multiracial nation with her seamless characters ranging from a Jewish grandmother to a Trinidadian sex worker, or a Groom-to-be out for the night. With a slight to political correctness, a bit of humor and, this time round, a somewhat sci-fi turn, Sarah Jones has awoken an awareness in her audiences that is both timely and affronting.
